We had a great week away! Central Alberta is a lovely part of the province with lots of farms, lakes and rolling hay fields. We took over 1100 pictures during the week so we'll do a two parter blog update.
The cottage we rented was in a little community on the NW corner of Gull Lake called Birch Bay. It took about 2 hours to get there (just long enough in the car for the girls!). We arrived at 3 and the lady we rented from (who has the big cottage next door) loaned us a croquet set and horseshoes. We settled in and started relaxing. No cable, no phone, no cell service - we did have internet but didn't use it too much.
Monday we went to Aspen Provincial Park for a beach day. Great sand, big playground, very shallow water (never got over Cara's head the whole way out to the rope boundary).
Wading in Gull Lake.
Gwen likes lakes.
During our picnic lunch Daddy amazed us all by breaking an apple in half with his bare hands!
Gwen loves eating outside.
More fun in the sand.
More fun at the playground too!
After supper we had a campfire - the girls waited patiently for it to get going.
The first of many s'mores consumed through the week!
Mummy - the master marshmallow roaster!
Passing my knowledge onto the next generation.
S'mores do strange things to Cara. Like make her stick marshmallow all over her face!
It was a late night for everyone that night!
Tuesday morning cuddles while planning our day.
The day was promising rain so we took a road trip to Red Deer and took in the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. Daddy and Cara are standing underneath the world high jump record!
Daddy and the girls playing a shoot out game.
Daddy and Cara doing a 200m wheelchair race.
Mummy tried too. Daddy got a new world record on this game!
Byrne girls bobsledding.
Gwen on the luge sled.
Cara on the luge sled.
Mummy pretending to be speeding down the luge track!
Daddy pretending to be speeding down the skeleton track!
Snow boarding Cara!
Snow boarding Gwen!
Wednesday was a nice sunny day to go to a U Pick!
Can't beat a freshly picked beet!
Green beans, yellow beans and even blue beans!
The bean plants were the perfect height for Gwen.
Daddy and Cara picking raspberries!
Gwen was very good at picking raspberries and eating them all. We had to kind of keep her away from the bushes after awhile!
A successful trip!
Later that day we took a little trip to a town called Rimbey. The girls found this train to check out.
They also found a nice little playground too.
Back at "our little cottage" (as Cara called it) more croquet was played before another campfire with more s'mores.
Having fun at the fire.
The day ended with Gwen having a bath in the sink. The cottage only had a stand up shower and Gwen suffered through one of those (so traumatic we couldn't do that again!).
So, we'll finish up this post now. Tomorrow the rest of the week's pictures will be up!
A pond... a lake... blue beans... Lots of memories and lots of great photos. Thanks for sharing! - Grampy
